To discover Mornington sanctuary, travel along the Gibb River Road to the signposted turnoff. The distance to Wilderness Camp from the following is:

  • 330 km (5 hours) from Derby;
  • 550 km (7 hours) from Broome;
  • 565 km (8 hours) from Kununurra; and
  • 385 km (6 hours) from Fitzroy Crossing.
From the turnoff (at Mt House) drive a further 88 km (1.5 to 2 hours) south to the Wilderness Camp.

By Air

The Wilderness Camp has a 1,000 m airstrip (S. 17.31.40 E. 126.07.12, elevation 670 ft, parking and windsock at SW corner - 2 NM east of the camp). Charter flights to Mornington sanctuary are available from Broome (1 hour 40 minutes), Kununurra (1 hour 20 minutes), Halls Creek (1 hour) or Fitzroy Crossing (30 minutes). Price on application.

How To Get There

Take the Kalumburu Road turnoff from the Gibb River Road. • Travel 59km to Drysdale River Station,which will be the last fuel stop before travelling to the Plateau and provides meals and snacks. • From Drysdale travel a further 100km to the Mitchell Falls turnoff (on your left hand side). • Cross over the King Edward River crossing and continue travelling towards the Mitchell Plateau Airstrip. • It is a further 65kms, approximately 2 hours drive, from the turnoff to Mitchell Falls WIlderness Lodge. • When you pass a sign to Kandiwal Community on the left, continue for another 4kms. • Turn left into the Lodge private road at the APT Wilderness Lodge sign. • Travel down the private road 1.8km to the Lodge to the Visitor Carpark on the left.

From Derby, travel along the Gibb River Road past the Imintji Community/Store to the Saddlers Creek crossing, 500m east of Imintji Community.
At the crossing turn right into the access track marked by an “APT Wilderness Lodge” sign.

From Kununurra, travel along the Gibb River Road and turn left after you cross Saddlers Creek Crossing at the “APT Wilderness Lodge” sign.
Travel 200 m and turn left onto another access track, before travelling a further 50m to camp.

From the Great Northern Highway, go through a gate, follow the Spring Creek Track, passing the Ranger Station/Visitors Centre (allow at least 2.5 hours to travel this 53km).
At the T Junction, turn right toward the airstrip. Follow the road and continue past the airstrip and Piccaninny Creek turnoff.
Travel a further 1.2 km, continue straight ahead, passing the Walardi Public Camp Area turnoff. Keep going past the sign - No through Road - Private Camps.
Take the first driveway on the left at the “APT Wilderness Lodge” sign. Park in the car park.

Situated between Great Northern and North West Coastal Highways, the drive to Mount Augustus is mainly on unsealed roads.

From the south east, from Meekatharra go west 218 km to Landor, 55 km to Burringurrah and 42 km to the Mount Augustus Outback Touris Resort where fuel, water, accommodation and camping sites are available.

From the north go east from the Great Northern Highway 25 km south of Kumarina Road house and you will travel 243 km all on unsealed road to the Mt Augustus Outback Touris Resort.

From the west, turn off the North West Coastal highway at Carnarvon, travel 173 km east to Gascoyne Junction on some sealed and some unsealed road, about half and half. There are two roads you can take from Gascoyne Junction, one via the Kennedy Range National Park and the other further east and then north. Both ways you will encounter the Cobra Bangemall Inn at Cobra Station where comfortable station stay accommodation is available. Check at Gascoyne Junction Shire office which of the two roads are in the best condition for travel.

Middle Lagoon is 182 kilometres north of Broome via the Cape Leveque Road. Allow for at least two and a half hours. While the main Cape Leveque Road is sealed, the 33km access road into Middle Lagoon is unsealed and restricted to 4WD access. The road is very sandy and corrugated in places and care is needed to navigate this, particularly if you are towing. Check road conditions with the Broome Visitor Centre (08 9195 2200) or the Shire of Broome before departing.
Please ensure you stay on the main Middle Lagoon Access Road and do not take side tracks as these may access restricted Aboriginal Land.
