THINGS TO SEE IN PORT HEDLAND

HERE ARE A FEW OF OUR FAVOURITE LOCAL ATTRACTIONS

What's the weather like?

Port Hedland has a tropical climate with humid, wet weather in the wet season and warm temperatures year-round. Summer (Dec-Feb) brings an average max temperature of 36°C, with a minimum of 25°C. In winter (Jun-Aug), the average max is 27°C, and the minimum is 13°C. Tropical Cyclones occur between December and April, so it's important to know safety procedures.

A bit of Port Hedland's history

Founded in 1896 and named after Captain Peter Hedland, who explored the area in 1863, the town served pastoral interests. In 1891, exports from the Nullagine and Marble Bar goldfields grew too large for the existing port, leading to the construction of a jetty and causeway by 1899. The town became the Pilbara's major port and iron ore mining base.
